Featured artist - LA Mitchell
L.A. Mitchell's own form of soul/jazz has been met with critical acclaim since
the release of her first, self-produced album, Debut. It was followed by a
live recording with her six-piece band, Nativa, at Wellington's iconic music
venue, The Matterhorn, a release that showcases the spectacular power of her
voice and polish of her live act.
"I think it was always my dream to be a musician but I didn't always feel it was possible or likely", says Blenheim-born Mitchell. But in 2000, a 12-month stint in Brazil, and a year of overwhelming contrasts, was the experience that widened her horizons and changed her outlook on life.
L. A. Mitchell returned to New Zealand with the intention of becoming a musician. She moved to Christchurch and studied contemporary music in 2001 before attending Christchurch Polytechnic's School of Jazz from 2002 to 2004.
Since then she has firmly established herself in the New Zealand music scene not only for her solo career, but also as a member of rock band Dukes and Dave Dobbyn's touring band. Dukes won the first MTV kick-start competition and have since performed support for INXS, Gomez and Th'Dudes.
L.A. has opened for Stevie Wonder at his NZ shows, for Dave Dobbyn in Europe, toured nationwide as part of Fly My Pretties and collaborates with the Sunshine Sound System and Oakley Grenell. In 2009 she was named the first songwriter in residence for Auckland University.
